June Gloom

I figured I'd try to squeeze in one more post for the month of June, so here you go. I've been having endless lazy weeks where I sleep all day and go out at night, and by the time I actually get dressed it's dark. There's summer for ya. I have work tomorrow, and then I have definite plans for Wednesday, so maybe two posts if I'm feeling generous. Kidding, kind of.

I'm trying to think of what direction I'd like to move my blog. I've been considering adding weekly food posts - Vegan Food Fridays? - but I don't want to become a lifestyle blog. But I guess it's ultimately up to me as to what I define my blog as. Personal style/outfit of the day/occasional fashion?

I know I'll risk sounding shallow and vapid and materialistic, but I'm feeling uninspired by my wardrobe lately. Perhaps less so since I've emptied four bags' worth of gently worn/old clothing, but it's feeling a little stale. I have ideas, but it's just a matter of being a little less frugal/having the patience to sift through thrift stores. On a similar but contradictory topic, I bought these sandals today. I generally associate Bakers with six inch patent leather stilettos, but these are quite the opposite.

Also, I can't wait to do something with my hair. I want to keep the length but get rid of the bulk, especially towards the ends.

And to add even more change, I've installed Disqus to replace the Blogger comments. I think it's easier to use, but we'll see. In the mean time, leave your thoughts below.

I finally made an About Me page.

The Poppy Tattoo

I'm particularly excited to share these photos because of a certain addition to my left arm. This shirt isn't most ideal for showing off a new tattoo, but I went out to New Hope with my mom and didn't want any sun to hit it. If you're ever in the Bucks County/Philadelphia area, New Hope is worth a visit... it's a quaint town with an assortment of shops stocking crafts, clothing, art, jewelry, smoking accessories, etc. There's also a ton of restaurants - we ate at a vegan place called Sprig and Vine. After seeing the size of the sandwiches served (mammoth) we decided to split a portobello panini and grilled broccoli. Despite my longtime love of broccoli and recent interest in grilled veggies, I never thought to grill it. It was so tender and flavorful. Added to my mental list of food to make, definitely.

The rest of my week has been rather dull - a few shifts at work, endlessly perusing online sales (I'm looking at you, Net-A-Porter), making and eating scones to cheer myself up from relationship issues, sleeping too much... perhaps next week, er, this week, I'll actually do something exciting.

Summer Adventures

I wore this on Friday to start a weekend full of rather spontaneous adventures. I went to dinner with my friend Lauren at a farm-to-table restaurant called Harvest, which is quite good. I ordered a veggie burger and Chinese stir fry, both delicious and filling. After we finished, we met up with some of her friends and my sister, and we were on our way to a magical playground with a wooden castle I've been to a few times before.

We made plans to go on another adventure sometime in the near future, so to my surprise, I was woken up by Lauren telling me we were going to Saint Pete's Village. It's a little historical town out in Chester County by French Creek State Park, and our main purpose of visiting was to climb the rocks along the creek. It was terrifying, but very fun. After a long day of walking, we returned to my house where we ate dinner and contemplated heading into the city for tattoos. We ended up staying here and listening to old music we used to like in middle school, which was pretty fun.

She wanted to get a tattoo Sunday morning, so I told her I would accompany her. I had the slight inclination to finally get my first tattoo - something I've been pondering for months? years? - so I brought in a few sketches to the shop (Body Graphics in Philly) and did it. I now have a beautiful poppy located on the underside of my left upper arm. I'm very pleased with how it turned out! I posted a few photos on Tumblr/Twitter, but once it's healed a little I'll be sure to post better ones. And given its location, it's sure to make appearances in my regular photos...

How's that for an adventurous weekend?

And maybe I just need a change

Today is oddly bittersweet. My brother graduated from high school today, which has had close to no impact on me other than that it’s been making me think about the past year since I’ve been out of high school. I graduated. I spent a summer frolicking in the sun and doing whatever before I flew off to London. And then I lived there for four months, then I returned. I started my American undergraduate education in suburban Philadelphia, and I finished my first year of university. I went to - and fell in love with - Los Angeles and discussed plans to move there by next summer.

I’ve done a lot - it’s been quite a year. But I feel like I’m in the same position I was in on this day in 2011. Only without hometown “friends” I spent time with in years past, and without the excitement of going to a foreign country, obviously. I just want to be somewhere else, several thousand miles west or east.

On another note, I haven't been up to all that much lately. I've been working quite a bit and not doing much else. My summer has been very lazy so far. I'm hoping to go to the beach sometime in the next week or two, but I don't know the likelihood of that actually happening...

Well, until later.

Everyday would be a holiday from real

Silhouette Girl personal style college fashion blog Philadelphia Venice California Cardigan - Target, dress - H&M, cuff - antique, shoes - Keds, bag - Lulu's

I wore this on my second to last day in Los Angeles, during which I ended up doing one of the stereotypical bus tours. I generally hate acting like a tourist, but I figured it was my only opportunity to actually see Hollywood, Beverly Hills, etc. because neither of my travel companions cared to do so. After a long day of sightseeing I headed back to Venice, where I came across a parking lot full of food trucks... which was the obvious choice for dinner, given my companions' and my varying tastes and dietary habits. I had an interesting - in a good way - veggie sushi burrito, which was essentially a big sushi roll wrapped in rice paper. For dessert, Sweet E's Bakeshop was offering miniature vegan chocolate cupcakes with the best, fudgiest icing ever. It gives me something to aspire to in the realm of baking!

We walked back along Main Street, which is filled with colorful boutiques, shops selling local artisans' work, natural food markets and various eateries. The atmosphere of Venice/Santa Monica is so different from most cities I'm familiar with; if anything, the streets, plants and weather are vaguely reminiscent of my brief stay in Barcelona. But seeing such a popular place - on a Tuesday night, no less - is not something I'm used to. Philly has its own merits, but I fell in love with the little bit of Los Angeles I did see.
