My morning routine is quite simple, for the most part. I don't wear foundation or eyeshadow, and I don't own a professional hair straightener or curling iron. My preferred tools are mascara and blow dryers. I generally keep my hair short, which means it takes infinitely less time to shampoo, dry, and maintain. Upon returning to the States, I was horribly underwhelmed with my years-old dryer - even in comparison to the cheapest one Boot's sold. While on the market for a new hair dryer, Misikko contacted me to review a Hana Air. Even upon a first glance, I was impressed with its sleek appearance and lengthy cord, but once I actually used it I decided this is the best blow dryer I have ever used.

Of course, even the bests have their strengths and weaknesses, so I've comprised an unbiased list of pros and cons.

Pros:
1. It dries my hair in half the time of other blow dryers.
2. The long cord means I never accidentally pull the plug out of the wall while using it.
3. It's quiet in comparison to other dryers I have used, but more powerful than most.
4. There are three temperature settings: cool, warm, and hot.
5. There are two power settings: low and high.
6. It's easy to hold and not too heavy, which can be a problem with others.
7. Less time to dry my hair means less frizz and smoother hair.

Cons:
1. The on/low/high switch sometimes changes in its storage space, which is quite startling when I plug in the device.
2. The hot setting can be too hot, but the warm setting isn't warm enough. There's a separate cool button I often accidentally press while using it.
3. It's rather expensive compared to other dryers I've purchased. (However, from my experience so far, the retail price is indicative of quality; I expect this dryer to last a while.)

Now, the real moment of truth: would I recommend this product to a friend? I would, but: I don't know how it works on different hair types. (I asked my sister to try it out, but she has hair similar to mine.) If you're not looking to invest in a blow dryer, this is not for you. Overall, I'm very content, and I would suggest that anyone interested in a new hair dryer at least take a glimpse at what this one has to offer.

Today was such a beautiful day! I went to yoga in the morning and realized that it was quite mild outside, so I decided to bare my legs for the first time in 2012. The last time I wore anything of the sort (excluding brisk walks to the gym) was in November, in Barcelona - almost three months ago. In the equivalent time, it will be spring! Yes, I'm already starting the spring countdown, though it doesn't seem so far away when we have mild days scattered through the cold.

My friend Toby was kind enough to take these photos for me today - it's nice to have a set of outdoor photos again, since the fluorescent lighting in my room gets to me. I haven't really much else to write about; the rest of my day shall consist of homework and a trip to the gym if I complete enough work! I've a handful (literally - I have to draw hands) of drawings to do and a few reading assignments. Adios!

A New Start

I keep consciously telling myself to be less apologetic and self-pitying, but I can't help my urge to start this long overdue post with negativity: these photos aren't too fancy. And of course, it's been quite a while - more than two weeks! My explanation: I left for school, I moved into my dorm, and I'm still settling in. Campus isn't all that large, but I haven't come across any deserted areas appropriate for photo-taking. So for now, my tiny dorm (and high bed, which makes me look tiny!) will have to suffice.

Despite all of this stress, I've been adjusting moderately well to college life in the USA. I might be experiencing reverse culture shock in some aspects, but college life here is indeed different from what I experienced in the UK! I've been to the gym more times than I had gone to a gym in my entire life. I suppose it's a productive way to spend time in comparison to endlessly scrolling on Tumblr, but I hope I can find activities on campus that are more in tune with my own interests!

I suppose you can see a bit of it in the above photos, but here's a snapshot of my resting area:

The duvet is from Primark, the world map is from Frankie magazine (purchased on Islington High Street), the other is a map of the London Underground, and the photos strung above are on a card string from Paperchase. I guess I decided to take a bit of my life in the UK back to Philadelphia!

For some reason I didn't manage to properly focus my camera during this little shoot, so I decided to have a bit of fun with editing. I'm quite fond of these jeans I picked up at Urban - my weakness, I admit - when they were having a $10 off denim sale. The cut makes me feel rather tall, since the rise is high and the inseam is short. They're fitted but roomy enough so I can breathe and actually move. I've given myself the goal to stray from jeans and skirts/dresses, since I tend to wear those pieces most frequently. I guess these are a step in that direction!

I should probably start preparing for school (in the USA!) since I leave next week, but just the thought of picking up and leaving again is a bit of a drag. I'm both anxious and excited for university to begin! Luckily, I live very close to home this time around and will have the opportunity to see my pets essentially every weekend if I so choose.

Once again I'm eyeing up lenses on Amazon... this excessive shopping spree needs to stop.

Vegan Japchae Recipe

I'm not really one for New Year's Resolutions unless food is involved - it was a goal years ago to go vegetarian and then vegan, which did happen. I want to post more recipes and food experiments on the blog, since I've realized how much cooking and baking (and then eating!) relaxes me. Plus it's fun.

My dad's co-worker gave him a bag of Dangymeon (Korean glass noodles made from sweet potato starch) before I left for London, and I then happened to try the dish at a vegan restaurant in the city. I fell in love with its colorful, comforting taste, so I prepared it for Christmas Eve dinner with my family based on a recipe from the aforementioned colleague. This time around I used whatever veggies I had on hand, thus I omitted a few ingredients, but I'll give the original, more authentic recipe.

VEGAN JAPCHAE - makes roughly two large servings

Ingredients:
-Dangymeon noodles (I used 1/3 of the pack)
-Olive oil
-Fresh spinach
-Two or three carrots, julienned
-One red pepper, finely chopped
-One yellow onion, sliced into long pieces
-Green onion, sliced vertically then horizontally
-Shiitake mushrooms*
-Two cloves garlic, minced
-Soy sauce
-Sesame oil
-Toasted sesame seeds
-A block of tofu, drained and pressed, then cut into cubes

*You can use fresh, dried, or canned mushrooms. If using dried, I'd recommend soaking these prior to starting cooking, since it takes a while. Then slice into smaller pieces. If using fresh, just slice them. If using canned, rinse.

1. Parboil the spinach, then drain. Put it in a large bowl, then toss with sesame oil, soy sauce, and sesame seeds.
2. In a wok, saute the onions in olive oil until clear and fragrant, then add to bowl.
3. Use the same process for the carrots, red pepper, and green onion.
4. Saute the garlic until fragrant, then add mushrooms. Add to the bowl.
5. Mix all vegetables in the bowl.
6. Cook the noodles according to the directions on the package, drain.
7. In a separate pan, cook the tofu in oil until golden on each side. Add soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, then cook a bit longer.
8. In the hot wok with a little oil, add all vegetables and the noodles, but not the tofu.
9. Heat thoroughly, then add soy sauce, sesame oil, and sesame seeds.
10. Top dish with tofu, then eat!

I have modified this dish slightly from the original recipe, but I think overall the integrity remains intact. By no means am I an expert on Korean food or cooking, but it's pretty similar to the serving I tried at Itadaki Zen in London. Even if it's not entirely authentic, it's still pretty good!

Somehow a new year has come upon us yet again. I spent last night making japchae, fishing for plans, sitting in my bedroom until 11:53pm, arriving at my first (entirely spontaneous) destination at 11:58pm, going to another friend's house after, staying up until 4:30am... you know, typical New Year's Eve. I can't really complain; I saw some friends I hadn't seen since being home, I celebrated, I spent time with people I enjoy.

Today my aunt had my family over for dinner, which was very nice! I planned to take outfit photos in the city, but by the time everyone arrived, it was getting a bit dark. Plus I prefer this outfit without a coat! This space was formerly occupied by a table that has been relocated to our dining room... I think a desk and/or a comfy chair will be quite useful. Seems I'll be taking a trip to IKEA this week! I know many people hate the store for its unusual layout and hard-to-assemble merchandise, but I am quite the opposite - I love it.

2011: A Year in Outfits

I welcomed 2011 as a year of surprise and mystery, both of which were fulfilled beyond my expectations. I agonized over the college decision process, I graduated high school, I spent a summer loving life before I flew across the pond to spend my first semester of university in London. Last year, I would have found this very idea to be entirely absurd, but even in my 2010 review post I accepted that things often work out in the craziest ways possible. At this point, I'm quite glad some things didn't happen. I had my heart set on attending RISD in autumn of 2011, but I ended up thousands of miles away from home instead. I wouldn't change that for anything. 2011 has been a year of decisions and transitions, all of which I suppose are quite natural for someone my age.

January: I just can't quit now, you really got a hold on me.
I dyed my hair red and enjoyed wearing my Docs with floral prints.

February: Zigzag and plaid
After a few weeks of staying home sick with glandular fever, I returned to school and mixed prints. While wearing Doc Martens.

March: All the styrofoam began to melt away.
I enjoyed the stoned-librarian turn my style began to take, and I ended up as Teen Vogue's pick of the day.

April: Philly Frolicking
Weeks after a rejection from a certain school whose colors are brown and red, I took a trip into Philly and explored NoLibs.

May: Last Day
I enjoyed my last day of high school...

June: Graduation Day
...and a month later, I graduated.

July: Back to school vibes
I pondered life in a park, and it started to sink in that I would be quite far away come autumn.

August: Going away party
My friend threw a going away party in my honor, and a few days later I packed by bags and left the country.

September: Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why would I want to be anywhere else?
I took a cue from a famous British songstress and enjoyed a few sunny days in London town.

October: Return from the countryside
After a weekend retreat to the Malvern Hills, I returned to London with a sense of rejuvenation.

November: Hilsener fra København
I went to Copenhagen, Denmark! I've long been enthralled with Scandinavia, so this was quite a treat (although very cold).

December: Home is wherever I'm with you
Three and a half months, four countries later, I returned to a wintery Philadelphia. Home.

Here's to a 2012 full of surprises!

Earl Grey Tea and Brief Reflecting

I wore this to grab lunch with a family friend (whom I hadn't seen in months!) and my siblings. It was quite nice - we went to Panera, where I always order the Mediterranean Veggie sandwich. I also had some earl grey tea, undoubtedly influenced by the prominence of tea in England. It's so much better than coffee. Ever hear of "coffee time"? Exactly.

A few weeks back, someone asked me on Tumblr about school, specifically if it was giving me a hard time because my outfits seemed less inspired. I replied that was indeed true, based on a variety of factors, naturally. I'm reunited with my over-stocked closet, I have no qualms about wearing heels because I walk much less, afternoon naps aren't nighttime naps (it is dark in England by 4pm), I haven't really had the time to delve into posts on my Google reader feed, etc. Though I can't help but feel (paradoxically) less pressure to dress a certain way. London is a very, very stylish city - my excursions nowadays involve wondering where all the brogues went and where all these sweatpants came from - but it's a little overwhelming to me in that sense.

I have an idea of how I want to present myself, both in real life and on my blog, but I felt I couldn't quite live up to my own expectations. I hate to admit it, but I felt a bit (perhaps an understatement) inferior to native Londoners in regards to aesthetics. It's so funny because London has a reputation that "anything goes" - it's evident that street style is a friendly competition to see who can dress quirkier. And that's just the thing; though I may feel out of place in my small hometown, I felt invisible in London. And that feeling didn't exactly motivate me to put on a pair of five inch heels.

I hope to further reflect upon my time abroad before the New Year, but that's it for now. Might go see the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo at the cinema if it isn't sold out! Enjoy your evening!

Last day in London (16/12/2011)

I would have liked to have posted these photos while still in London, but I was busy exploring one last time... and packing. I went to the National Portrait Gallery, V&A Museum (my favorite!), Liberty, and Selfridge's one last time. My departure itself was chaotic and a tad bitter; I realized I forgot a handful of belongings in my room, I was running on literally no sleep, I couldn't sleep on the plane despite that fact. I cried upon seeing my friend Tracey, who accompanied my mom to the airport. I cried hysterically once we drove down my street and even more when I stepped inside my house and saw my cat. Tears of joy, obviously. There's no place like home!

I've been relaxing as much as physically possible, with my cat by my side, of course. I haven't felt like leaving my bed too much, but I did to bake Christmas cookies, see some friends, go to Target (yay!) to get wrapping paper, and whatever else. Unfortunately, I think I'm coming down with something. Perhaps it's from last week's lack of sleep.

In case you were wondering, my tea habit has only increased since touching down in the US of A... I seem to have forgotten I used to be addicted to coffee!

I'm so excited for Christmas. Normally I'm such a scrooge, but I am just so excited to give everyone their gifts! I think I did quite well this year with my selections, but perhaps I'm just being hopeful since nothing is returnable, unless the recipient cares to travel to London... There's just no place like home for the holidays.

Eleven

Dressing for Monday mornings = wearing tried and true favorites. Can't say I really anticipated the bone-chilling weather, though. Probably the coldest day in London I've experienced! It is December, after all. My hands were numb during this (very brief) shoot.

The days here are dwindling, with the countdown bearing just eleven days at this point. It's all final exams (and essays) and Christmas shopping now - maybe a few drinks at nearby pubs and perhaps the last trips to my favorite museums here. (Note: I visited the Victoria Albert Museum for the third time yesterday, and I have still not seen half of the collection on display.)

On an incredibly positive note, I couldn't be more excited to see my animals.

On an unrelated note, I've been updating my Tumblr to the point of obsession. Must have something to do with finals quickly approaching...

To Give Thanks

I wore this last Thursday, during the American holiday of Thanksgiving. I ran a few errands with Christian before heading out to dinner, at which point I switched these shoes for my Rachel Comey booties. I probably would have celebrated by making some stuffed squash and baked goods if I didn't have visitors, but of course, I did, so naturally we went to an Asian-fusion restaurant called Spice Market (owned by world-famous chef Jean-Georges). I had been to the New York branch as had my aunt, but I was incredibly excited to share it with my family. Since vegan food can be hard to come by in many classically British restaurants (and even those in the States...), this was an excellent compromise for everyone.

We left the restaurant entirely stuffed, though not from our ordinary American Thanksgiving fare. I'm still in a state of disbelief that I am so fortunate to have been able to spend this holiday with my family, and similarly that the week flew by and everyone is back in the States at this point. Even more shocking is that I've less than three weeks left here in good old London Town.

I would like to note that I am still feeling quite ill, and when I'm sick there's nothing I enjoy more than cuddling with my cat. My mind is already home.

These were taken last Monday... I'm feeling a bit under the weather now. I wore this to the airport to meet my friends and family! The reunion was so nice; I didn't expect they would already be waiting by the time I arrived, but I spotted the group and my brother saw me. My friend Lauren ran to hug me, then I dashed over to the rest of the group, almost slipping on the airport's smooth floor.

I do enjoy London in many ways, but the visit made me realize how excited I am to return home, especially in time for the holidays. Seeing these people makes me want nothing more than to be in my house, cuddled beneath a blanket with my cat on my lap, eating edamame and watching a movie with my sister. It is bittersweet that I will be in the air twenty one days from now, en route to Philadelphia... but it's becoming increasingly sweeter.

My aunt and my friend Christian (who took these photos) are still in town, so I shall spend time with them over the next two days. It's nice having companions in London, which can often feel quite impersonal.

I realized I haven't worn all of the shoes I brought with me to London, so I decided it's about time I utilize my many pairs. It's essentially winter here, which I normally refuse to accept back in the States until December hits. I'm just in disbelief that I've been here for nearly three months now, and in a month's time I will be back in Pennsylvania. It's bittersweet, most definitely.

On an undeniably positive note, my family and a few friends will be here in London this upcoming week! With the exception of briefly seeing my aunt before she had a connecting flight back to the States, I haven't seen any of these people in three months. I couldn't be happier that I get to see them, spend time with them here in London, and celebrate Thanksgiving with them.

This is my first weekend in London since October since I've been traveling so much! I want to relax and do some school work, but at the same time, I want to do exciting things because I have only a month left here. Decisions, decisions.

Fui a Barcelona

So... I went to Barcelona! Here I am in Park Guell, an amazing outdoor space designed and landscaped by Antoni Gaudi. The weather was beautiful - 72F in November! We strolled through the park, climbing its stone steps and marveling the amazing view of the city. Everything was so beautiful! I loved seeing some Gaudi's work; we stayed in a hostel on Passeig de Gracia, which includes Casa Battlo and La Pedrera. I didn't take the opportunity to go inside either of these, but the following day, we did visit La Sagrada Familia.

As usual, I feel I didn't have adequate time to explore the city. However, I'd love to return sometime in the future - perhaps when the cathedral is completed (estimated anywhere from 2025 to 2040).

I had wanted to visit Spain for ages, since I've been learning the language since I was eleven. My speaking didn't really extend past a seventh grade level, but I thoroughly enjoyed being able to put it to use.

Unfortunately, I didn't really get to experience any typical Spanish food, but I did buy some rice with which I intend to attempt a vegan paella dish. It's too bad I didn't find any saffron there...

I still have to post photos from Cardiff, Copenhagen and now Barcelona. I think I shall round up a few photos to show my favorite parts of each city!

Somehow this is my first time wearing these booties on the blog... I've worn them out a few times, but I suppose I didn't take photos because it was nighttime. They still have yet to properly mold to my feet, but they're getting there. Today's wear might have a little something to do with wanting to wear them this weekend. I'm traveling again! This time, it's somewhere much warmer. I think I'll keep it a surprise, but it's somewhere I've wanted to go for quite some time, so I'm very excited. I know I'll be taking lots of photos!

These next two weeks are looking wonderful - an excursion this weekend, the following will be spent here in London, and then that week a few family and friends are visiting! I've been having dreams about reuniting with them. Whenever I think of meeting them in the airport, the final scene in Love Actually starts playing in my head, Beach Boys in the background and all. It's very safe to say I love life, as of late.

It's a bit funny to me that London is already in Christmas-mode: Liberty (and every other department store) have had their Christmas shops up and running for the past month, the lights on Oxford Street were illuminated last week, and there will soon be ice-skating rinks in various spots - including Somerset House, where fashion week takes place. Somehow, I'm not so bitter about the approach of this time of year as I normally am. Maybe there is something magical about London at Christmastime. Or maybe I just watch Love Actually too much. I'm giving a vote for the latter.

Greetings from Copenhagen! I write this from the lounge of a hostel, exhausted from a long day of walking and sightseeing. It's so beautiful here. If it weren't so cold (at the beginning of November! it feels like January!), I'd consider studying here. It's odd how soon I've managed to fall in love with the city, but each excursion from the treacherous streets of London has been quite magical. The pace of life here seems much slower, with time for smiles at passersby and no need to push others out of the way on the Metro. It's not spotlessly clean - there's rubbish on pavement, there's a plethora of wheat-paste posters and brightly colored spray paint. But I like this. It makes it feel free and less part of a system, if that makes any sense.

I've long had an adoration for things Scandinavian - Ikea, Norse mythology, the word itself - and this trip has reassured that crush. If only it didn't get dark at 4pm, and if it were summer... I feel like I didn't allow nearly enough time to explore thoroughly (somehow I missed the concept store Weekday, which I'm now longingly stalking online) and I would very much like to see cities in Sweden and Norway.

I really can't explain why, since there's no logical reason, but Copenhagen vaguely reminds me of Philadelphia. Maybe it's the quiet, charming side streets or the abundance of simple graffiti. Even the color of the pavement seems familiar, and it's been months since I've seen cars drive on the right side of the road! Perhaps it's my perception that I cannot get lost in both cities, whereas this does not hold true in New York City or even London. The size is manageable, but not small.

On another note, I tried to channel hip European twenty-somethings in this ensemble. Also, please be incredibly surprised that 90% of my hair stays up in a low bun (as illustrated above). This hasn't happened in quite some time, probably two years. Again, be amazed.

I wore this yesterday to class. Afterwards, I browsed the high street, picked up some groceries, then picked my classes for next semester back in the States. I am, of course, looking forward to going home and seeing my family, friends, and pets... but the more I think about it, the less I want to leave London. I know once I return home I'll just long for the days I've spent wandering aimlessly here, the way I detest the Underground so strongly, the civic indifference everywhere in the city.

Even so, I'm taking another holiday this weekend, this time to somewhere farther north, and thus, colder. 8C weather? Looks like I'll finally have to pull out my winter coat. Regardless of my avid hate for the cold, I'm very excited for this trip because I hear it's a beautiful country and city. I might have previously mentioned the destination, but I'll keep it a surprise for everyone else.

My aunt sent me this skirt earlier this month in a care package, along with a few pairs of Missoni x Target socks and tights. I briefly met up with her on Thursday in a cafe at Heathrow, which was very wonderful indeed. I hadn't seen her in practically two months, so however short the visit was, it was great to catch up and see a familiar face, particularly that of an incredible family member!

Speaking of familiar faces, I ran into my friend from my hometown who is also studying abroad in England. Turns out, he and his friend took a trip to Cardiff for the weekend as well! It was incredibly ironic, since we had talked earlier that week about possibly meeting up in London at some point. It left me in a state of shock, in all honesty!

In celebration of Halloween, many clubs were advertising special nights with spooky music and fancy dress. Naturally, we had to dress up as something... so upon finding ears and furry coats, we decided to be sheep. Dressing up was an experience in itself; we were commonly mistaken for pigs, cats, and whichever other animal has ears and fur. When we arrived back at the hostel, we took many photos of us, well, being sheep (or "sheepin' it up" as Angelique put it) only to discover the following day that the manager had seen footage of the incident. Embarrassing is surely an understatement. I do think the hilarity outweighed any mortification, though.

Unfortunately, even at barely half five, it's entirely dark in London and I've a paper to write anyway. I hope your weekend went well!

I took a spontaneous trip out of the city to the little seaside town of Brighton, with my main goal to visit Seven Sisters County Park. This is just the first small batch of photos I've edited, since I arrived back around 10pm and found myself exhausted.

Upon arrival, the park looks perhaps like many others - gorgeous hills speckled with grazing sheep, lots of open space - but its main feature is its white cliffs on the sea. I find it quite ironic that I've now seen the English Channel before I've even seen great beaches of the States. I've never seen the Gulf of Mexico or Pacific Ocean. I've only visited beaches in the three states, all bordering my home state of Pennsylvania. I was quite amused by the overall lack of sand.

And so I found myself standing before enormous white cliffs, in awe of the beauty.

England, from all I've seen, is such a gorgeous country. I suppose the US has its highlights as well, but to be honest, I haven't visited all that many national parks or made the pilgrimage to any magnificent sights. I am definitely taking advantage of some of what Britain has to offer - clearly not all - and it's given me a new found appreciation for nature's wonders.

PS The park is an hour outside of Brighton, or approximately three hours outside of London. It's definitely worth a visit, in my opinion.

Return from the countryside

Please excuse the absence of a Weekly Favorite post this week, as I spent a lovely weekend in the British countryside climbing the Malvern Hills, engaging in adventurous team-building activities, and chasing sheep. The soft, gentle wind there is such a contrast to that here in London... it's biting. Note to self: wearing an open-knit jumper in such weather is not advisable. Other than such effects, this jumper is a new favorite of mine. Burnt orange color? Yes. Crocheted lace pocket? Yes. I picked it up two weekends ago in a boutique called Style Showroom.

I scheduled an appointment at a nearby spa for tomorrow - I'm quite excited. For once, I'm able to justify paying for a massage, given that my back and shoulders are still sore from this past weekend, and my bed isn't remotely comfortable.

Despite such minor injuries, I've been led to reconsider whether I'm a "city person." I love London. It's a beautiful, culturally vibrant city filled with tons of entirely distinct neighborhoods. London makes me feel alive. However, this weekend exceeded my expectations, which I will admit were not very high initially. I fell in love with the rolling hills, the fresh air that caused my nose to run, the friendliness of people walking their dogs, the nonchalant sheep that grazed on majestic hills... In my mind, I felt more at home there than I do in London.

I wish I had photos to share of this beautiful, fantastic place - it inspired J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings - but I had a lapse of judgement when I decided to leave my camera in London. I wish I could have captured such beautiful sights, but at the same time, sometimes it's nice to see things directly instead of through a camera lens...

I hope all is well.

A Jumper and Waves

Didn't realize that half of my outfit is composed of pieces purchased here in London. I suppose this is quite a practical ensemble, although it was rather windy and I had to hold my skirt down a bit. This past weekend wasn't too shabby; I went to a pub with a few friends, came back home and drank a little too much, thus I slept all day Friday. I spent Saturday perusing shops on/near Oxford Street, which is one of London's largest shopping areas. I don't know why I bother going in that Topshop, as it's always incredibly crowded and the queues for fitting rooms snake around the entire store!

I made my journey there with the intentions of checking out the Salvation Army in the area (decent, will probably return when I feel like scouring) and Kingly Court off of Carnaby Street. The latter exceeded my expectations, by far!

I prefer shopping in non-high street stores, but boutiques can often be a little too intimidating. None of the boutiques in the center were like that, however; instead, they were warm but not pushy. I particularly enjoyed Style Showroom, which stocks the wares of independent, London-based designers. I walked out with a jumper (to debut soon) and a few stationery items, all under 30 quid!

Had I been feeling like spending more, I probably would have purchased an adorable bird-printed shirt... or a lovely photo-print dress from Beyond the Valley (boutique on Carnaby Street).

While in Kingly Court, I also stopped in a little haberdashery shop called All The Fun Of The Fair. I seem to be drawn to brightly colored objects, as illustrated by the below photo:

Yep, I learned how to knit (via Youtube videos)! Because everyone needs a bright pink scarf! I've become familiar with the stockinette pattern, which I intend to improve upon by making a few scarves for family and friends.

I seem to enjoy crafts more and more as I explore different mediums.

Paris Fashion Week S/S 2012: Stella McCartney

This collection reaffirms my love for McCartney's sleep feminine aesthetic. Consisting of tailored blazers with curved lapels, fitted dresses with mesh insets, and retro pajama-esque garb, Stella gives her unique spin on the clean and classic.

What I love about Stella McCartney's work is that it's simple at the core, but never boring. Something is always ever-so-slightly zany, in the best way possible. Careful attention is paid to technical design and construction, but her collections always epitomize fun dressing for the smart, confident woman.

Quite ironically, I can't think of much to say that's remotely insightful. So I'll leave you with this: sigh.

Last of the Indian Summer

Clearly, I've developed a certain fondness for these oxfords of mine. For a while, I was not too keen on the idea of wearing brogues, but they're flat and comfortable, as I've learned.

Ever since I arrived in London, I've been moving my style in a more librarian-esque direction. Almost slightly school-wear inspired, but I decided that I want my style to capture the idea of a stoned librarian. For the record, I am neither; people simply tell me I sound like one. Quite a funny juxtaposition, in my opinion.

I wore this for what I suppose is my last taste of warm weather until next spring. It's arguably more autumnal than summery, but still appropriate for temperatures above 80F.

I'd like to say I've decided this will be my photo spot, but I was stopped by a woman who inquired if I had a purpose for taking photos. I mumbled something about school, since that seemed the only response that would seem "credible." I'm quite shy when it comes to people watching me take photos, or even when someone else is holding the camera.

I've been pondering a statement from an interview I watched for one of my classes: most people do not produce anything of real value. It's an interesting topic, entirely subjective, of course. Who knows.

Yes, this photo's a tad blurry - I had been out all day, and by the time I returned to my friends' flat, it was a little dark. I love the Kensington area, from what I've seen anyway. I spent all afternoon Saturday at Kensington Gardens. Such a beautiful day! Apparently the temperatures this past weekend were record-breaking warm. I've been loving this Indian Summer.

Gorgeous, sunny weather just lends itself to good times. I'm convinced.

After hanging out at the flat for a bit, my friends Jeremy, Angelique and I went to a nearby pub and drank strawberry beer. I'm not one to turn down a full-bodied beer, but I was intrigued by the novelty of it. And it's delicious.

Paris Fashion Week S/S 2012: Rick Owens

Horizontal strips of light serve as the background for Rick Owens' show - almost resembling an enlarged electric bug zapper. Always one for provocativeness, he dubbed it a "gateway to heaven." Religious, spiritual references are evident, with strong elements of restraint despite the lack of typical restraining fashion - bondage devices and the like. For his S/S 2012 collection, Owens went against the idea of "horny dressing" in exchange for "stately elegance."

There's a medieval sense of display - mostly monochromatic, voluminous pieces distract from the presentation of the woman's body. Her head is the point of prominence, in a similar fashion to popes of the time.

Rick Owens makes a statement on originality of the individual, and perhaps the idea behind this collection is more powerful than the clothing itself. It's hard to say that though, given the impeccable design and creation of these garments. We'll call it a tie.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: Mary Katrantzou

If there's any show I wish I could have attended during LFW - meaning, if I had an invitation and didn't have art history class the same time - it's Mary Katrantzou's. I find it quite easy to be entranced by Katrantzou's bold, artistic designs. Though only on the scene for a few seasons (A/W 2009), she's become a powerful new voice. There's quite a difference between her work and simple garments created by other designers. This collection is indeed less architectural, and hence more wearable than prior seasons', but there's a depth to these pieces that not all designers can conjure.

Inspired by the contrast of man and nature, she adopts her influences in a literal sense - floral prints appear in a setting, a field. Motifs from nature are digitalized, blown up to the point of being unrecognizable.

I keep mentioning art vs. fashion and whether they are entirely exclusive. I don't believe they are; it's quite evident through many designers that fashion is a wearable extension of simple "art." When I question my purpose as an artist, I can't help but think studying fashion would be an appropriate path. I suppose my training as a designer at this point is absolutely minimal - but isn't that what university is for? To guide one? To teach? Yes? Yes.

Sunny London Days

One thing I've realized is this isn't simply a "trip" - it's quite much to call it that. Nor does simply calling it a trip address the main reason why I'm here, which is of course, school. I only started classes last week, but I'm sincerely enjoying them all. My favorite, perhaps, is a writing course; I prefer the analytical side of English to simply reading and interpreting literature.

I'm regaining confidence in myself. I can't describe it any other way besides simply odd that upon coming here, I felt, in some aspects, inferior to others. My classmates, strangers, friends at home, etc. I suppose it has a bit to do with the fact that I'm in a new environment and thus entirely vulnerable. I'm adjusting. Becoming more reassured. It's nice.

Despite thoroughly enjoying my classes, I'm questioning once again it is that I want to do. Currently, my major is jewelry and metals. It is something I do quite love, but I don't know that it necessarily matches my goals as an aspiring artist. With that being said, my current university doesn't offer either of the majors I'd want to switch to - architecture or fashion design. Keep in mind I'm a very fickle being, and I change my mind constantly. It happens.

I have nothing scheduled on Fridays, which means my weekend has begun! I do hope to find something exciting to do, but I don't seem to be as into going to clubs as the rest of my peers. Big crowds aren't my thing, especially when the music is awful.

I realized it's been nearly three weeks since my last outfit post - where does the time go? I suppose all my blogging efforts had been dedicated to the coverage of LFW. It was a little more stressful than I had anticipated - not the events themselves, but editing, refining, and posting content. I'm glad my first fashion week was international, and I do think I'll try for NYFW next season if my schedule allows.

This photo was taken last Tuesday by my friend Jeremy. Truthfully, I've been having quite a difficult time actually securing friends. I'm quite introverted and reserved, and my homesickness has affected my mood. It's a cycle I know must end, but being in a foreign city with no close companion is just plain intimidating.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: Cristina Sabaiduc

Located in the basement of a seemingly office-like space, show goers were ushered into the middle of a room surrounded with a white catwalk. Applied to the walls with magnetic strips were pieces of cloth, though I didn't quite know what to make of the setup. No one had any idea where to look, definitely giving a mysterious atmosphere - but crammed into a space with so many women wearing tall heels, I don't think anyone knew where to look.

The show began as models appeared, wearing basic, revealing bodysuits. Each model circled the room, pausing to be clothed from the garments adorning the walls, with assistance from a few dressers.

The two dimensional wall decorations transformed into dresses, tops, pants, skirts, before our very eyes; although most of the audience had trouble seeing this process. This was a bold first attempt at a show during London Fashion Week, but some aspects fell slightly short. After this, I'd be disappointed to see the designer try a more traditional show, but perhaps seating could be arranged to allow for better views of the work.

Sabaiduc was inspired by the contrast of the natural environment and industrial waste, evident through patterns and textures present within the collection. The concept behind the clothing is arguably stronger than the design aesthetic - which again, is something that we're eager to see improved upon.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: J. JS Lee

As I walked into the Portico Room, I saw this would be an intimate presentation. Seated what I suppose would be considered front row (though there weren't many other rows), I was pleasantly surprised to see Susie Bubble take a seat next to yours truly. She relocated before the show started, but I was quite starstruck!

The collection is very sleek, quite minimal. There's no frills or anything very extravagant, though subtle shine does show in a look or two - influenced by the way her niece's cotton candy had stuck onto her clothing. Jackie Lee was inspired by 1920's silhouettes - long and dropped waists, box pleats, and a slightly subdued color palette. The shapes are slightly androgynous, but details are undeniably feminine.

The simple shapes allow playfulness within the garments themselves, whether via light, color, or texture. There's asymmetric hemlines, pencil skirts over knee-length trousers, slight ombre effects, and tied backs. The color palette is mostly monochromatic, but highlights of cobalt and peach appear.

Jackie Lee graduated from Central Saint Martin's in 2010, and received the prestigious Harrods Award for her work there. J. JS Lee was launched in March 2010, and has since become a part of NEWGEN. We can certainly expect more great things from Jackie Lee.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: Orla Kiely

After receiving my press pass, I was able to access all exhibitions within Somerset House - including, to my surprise, Orla Kiely. It's quite obvious that Kiely was inspired by sportswear from the 1940's and 1950's, evident through silhouette, color, patterns, and details.

The execution of the presentation was quite interesting. Models either stood on pedestals or lounged on garden chaises. They stood inanimate until another model came as a replacement. The lighting was rather dim, but spotlights shone, highlighting the clothing drastically.

Characteristically feminine and retro inspired, a background film showed models frolicking, exploring and adventuring throughout summer settings. This gives insight into the purpose - it's not intended to be too proper that it's impossible to move. It's playful and youthful, yet still sophisticated.

The Orla Kiely woman isn't too prim. She's creative and charming, intelligent and thoughtful. She fancies wearing dresses, but isn't too afraid to live while wearing them.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: Zoe Jordan

Situated in a warehouse type building, one would never guess a catwalk show was set to take place... aside from the long queue of stylish women outside the venue. Upon entering, it still seemed quite industrial, but a pleasant smell wafted through the air, signifying otherwise.

The collection is entirely feminine, though not without a few more structured pieces. It isn't too frilly - there's strength evident in the Zoe Jordan garment. As this is a spring collection, there are florals, but other prints show as well. Most noteworthy, perhaps is the peachy rust shade in a few looks... especially when paired with hints of shine.

Jordan was inspired by both the glamour and laid back elegance of the 1930s, which is referenced throughout. The slightly eccentric styling contrasts with the overall beauty of the collection, adding a little element of modernism.

Texture is added through rust-shaded sequins and brown suede. It's all classical Zoe Jordan - very feminine and undoubtedly pretty, yet given a unique spin with unexpected, surprising combinations.

Maybe now you see what constitutes taking too many semi-candid street style snaps. Truthfully, this is my favorite set of the three I've posted. A lens with a wider angle is probably better for this type of photography, but I just love the shallow depth of field that my 55mm lens gives. Almost the vibe of those at STREETFSN, if I fancy flattering myself. Well, more like Nam's than The Sartorialist's, I suppose.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: Spijkers en Spijkers

Upon arrival at Il Bottaccio for my first show of the day, I knew I was in for a treat. A beautiful building provided a lovely setting for the showing of Spijkers en Spijkers spring collection. The design team consists of Dutch twin sisters Truus and Riet Spijkers, graduates of Arnhem College of Arts. They rebel against what normally constitutes femininity, challenging society's and fashion's expectations.

Luckily, I was seated in an ideal spot to capture photos. I suppose this makes it one of the only shows where it was possible for me to do so!

Inspired by the tale of Scheherazade - One Thousand and One Nights - and the 1920's (as illustrated through silhouettes and subtly fringed elements), the collection shows an interesting take on geometry. Instead of featuring solely prints, the geometric shapes are based in the construction itself. Colored rhombus panels form a structure. Blacks are accompanied by neon shades, tweed jackets and pants make an appearance, a node to the inspiration source. Though we can see fairytale influences, it isn't typically whimsical or flouncy. Conversely, it's actually rather edgy.

Fashion inspired by a fairytale could easily veer into the damsel-in-distress territory, which is the opposite of what the Spijkers' did. The influence of Scheherazade herself is evident, as the designers cater towards the smart, independent, witty, yet stylish female.

London Fashion Week S/S 2012: Caroline Charles

My first show during LFW was Caroline Charles, in the BFC show space at Somerset House. Entering the tent gave me quite a rush! Unfortunately, the lighting was a tad poor, so my photos all turned out blurry.

The summer collection from Caroline Charles is ladylike, but not too fussy. It's not for girls - Caroline Charles designs for women. As smooth jazz music played in the background, models strutted wearing retro-inspired silhouettes. Though not very bold in color, there's definitely quite a bit of it - predominantly coral and navy blue.

Blue makes an appearance in a few distinct shades, including a deep cobalt and navy. A few models are topped with adorable boater hats, adding a retro vibe.

Floral prints are limited to two shades - white and navy or coral and navy. The silhouettes are relatively simple, and sunglasses adorn faces. These looks make me think of lunch on a yacht - sophisticated, but not too prim or overdone.

There's also a few more suited options - a spotty print appears on pants as well as a shirt, and simple white blouses are tucked into classic black trousers.

Perhaps my favorite part of the collection were the beaded pieces - gorgeous! Definitely more formal than the rest of the show, these tops add a dose of glamour and elegance to the black bottoms. Paired with ribbon chokers, these are just lovely.

NYFW S/S 2012: Steven Alan

Steven Alan, already making me long for summer days spent outside in the grass, preferably frolicking and/or picnicking. The characteristically preppy brand sends out pieces that are happy and simple without being too saccharine.

Always taking a lightweight approach to fashion, these garments are for everyday wear and tear. Perhaps not so much tear, one would hope. There's a youthful yet clean vibe to the collection, evocative of summers past.

NYFW S/S 2012: Suno

Normally showcasing bold colors and prints, the designers behind Suno eschewed color in exchange for something a bit more reserved than usual. There's still reds and yellows appearing, but it's an interesting turn for the label. Granted, the print combinations are still present, adding a dose of quirkiness.

The silhouettes become noticeably more feminine. Perhaps this collection is simply more wearable, head to toe.

Different can be a good thing, but in this case, it's merely not a bad thing.

NYFW S/S 2012: Rachel Comey

I'm sure I've mentioned my love for Rachel Comey's designs many a time on this blog, but usually my fascination focuses on her footwear creations. This time around, I'm still lusting over the shoes while giving equal attention to her garments. Never one too be frilly or twee, Comey's design aesthetic is always very "cool," for lack of better words.

We see a variety of prints, as usual, including digitalized cable knits and a multitude of stripes. Color does show up and the colorblocking is done well, but the monochromatic pieces steal the show - there's quite a bit of dimension to be seen.

Of course, none of this is to say an orange sandal isn't perfectly welcome. Rachel Comey, you've done it again.

Hello there! I suppose it's been approximately a week since my last post, but please forgive me - I've been out and about nonstop. All of this seems to have left me susceptible to a cold, which I'll have to fight my way through by Friday, aka the start of London Fashion Week.

This past weekend I went on a home stay about an hour out of the city. It was delightful. The family was so sweet and I felt very welcome in their home. On Saturday, I took a trip up to Windsor Castle. What a sight! It's everything you'd imagine a castle to be. I found myself particularly enthralled with the collection of art - paintings, photographs, and other relics. I cannot even fathom the construction and design process of buildings so elaborate and extravagant. It's quite breathtaking.

It's definitely a required visit in the UK, in my opinion.

I picked this dress up at Camden Market the other day for 12 pounds... roughly equivalent to $18. It's adorable and has already garnered a few compliments. Of course, I'm not too sure that it's of the highest quality, but the print was too cool too pass up.

Evidently, London weather and my hair have become enemies. Note to self: must buy a blow dryer and/or hair straightener. I'm used to battling humidity, but not sporadic rain while walking without an umbrella.

These photos were taken at a park behind my house. There's no indication that I'm in London, but I thought the location was photogenic enough as well as secluded enough to prevent a multitude of stares. This will probably be a go-to spot... for now, at least.

Today I have a scheduled walk, apparently focusing on artists and writers in London. I'm pretty excited about it!

On another note, London's weather has made me rethink whether everything I packed is actually practical. I need more sweaters, or jumpers, I suppose I should say. I also wouldn't mind the addition of proper pants... trousers and other more tailored styles. It's already a bit too chilly to wear bare legs, and I don't want to resort to tights just yet.

England's heavily varying weather has led me to warm up to looks of all sorts - even those appropriate for... autumn, gasp. The past few days the sun has made an appearance, although today did mark my first experience of London in the rain. One of very many, I can assume.

The rain did dampen plans I had for a picnic, but I did take outfit photos in a little park behind the house. Not surprisingly, people in the UK also look at me funny when I run back and forth to my camera! Oh well.

From what I've seen these past few days, my peers in London dress infinitely better than their American counterparts. I've seen several young men wearing button ups, yet only two people wearing sweatpants in public. Raises the bar a little bit, no?

London: Part One of very many

Not a week has passed since I arrived in London, but it feels like I've been here for so much longer. Perhaps it's because I've been rushing around, essentially nonstop, over the past few days. This weekend has provided me some downtime to sleep in, and explore without any agenda. I headed to Camden Market with a few flatmates, stumbled upon a vegan cafe called inSpiral, lost the group, and took the tube to Oxford Street just as shops were closing for the evening.

Aside from constant occupation, my mind has been in a different place as well - home. So many sights and sounds remind me of someone, something from home. I saw a girl with hair similar to my friend Tracey's in a store today, so I became excited until it clicked that it was not her.

I will not lie - I am homesick. Being in a huge city with no true friends is tough. Instead of mingling with flatmates at night, I've been either curled up in my bed or on Skype with my mom or sister.

I know this feeling will lessen during the upcoming weeks, as I meet more people, become better acquainted with the city, and start classes.

I obviously have not done an outfit post in some time, partially due to stress and partially due to a lack of tripod/person-free place to go or someone to take photos. I haven't really taken my camera out much yet, but I expect to tomorrow post-farmers' market browsing.

I hope all is well in your lives, and that your summer is ending on a good note.

Going away party

Well, I've already experienced a little excitement today... felt the 5.8 magnitude earthquake from Virginia. I suppose all of us east coast residents are a little shaken up over this (no pun intended), considering anything of this sort is a rare occurrence. I often start shaking with no rhyme or reason, so I figured it was just that. Once I heard stuff rattling and my dog barking, I knew it wasn't just me.

One look outside, and it's beautiful. Nothing of a devastating nature happened, as far as I know. I guess I shall get on with my day.

I wore this yesterday to my going-away party. This t-shirt is so comfortable, even though it partially exposed my midriff and I tend to avoid anything that does so. It's just a perfect lightweight cotton. This outfit is rather summery, but I'll definitely try to wear all of these pieces once the weather cools down, too. I recently wrote an article on Chictopia focusing on transitional dressing, by the way. You can read it here.

I'm still having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I'm leaving. In less than a week. Guess I should do everything I've wanted to this summer in these short days...

I kept hoping I'd get around to posting (an outfit, an editorial, etc.) before another weekly favorites post... but alas, I've been pretty busy enjoying my last few days in the States. I ended up in New Jersey with my brother, sister, and her friend, who are all really great friends to me. We laid on the beach until it began to rain, then ate some food - I discovered a little place with food I can eat, on a boardwalk of all places!

Last night I made some food for my family in honor of my going away. Seems a little weird in hindsight that I had the duty of preparing food for my own celebration dinner, but I really do enjoy cooking and baking. I made a vegan margherita pizza and some squash served over pasta. It was nice to see a few people I probably won't see before my departure.

Tonight, my friend is hosting a going away party for me. I had originally wanted to throw a get together myself, but then I remembered how stressed I get when there's many people at my house and I'm in charge. Hopefully it'll be a good time!

Dinner and a movie

I wore this yesterday to an appointment, then to the movies and dinner with my sister and aunt. It's really nice that I'm getting to see most of the people I want to before I leave. Even those I haven't, there's still two weeks left... but time is ticking.

Lately I've been questioning my style in terms of what's "normal." Ideally, I'd like to have a more man-repelling style - something that fits my tastes more - but viewing it that way would just seem purposely rebellious. And that's not what I'd like to do. Compared to my peers in this area, I dress a little eccentrically. I receive comments and stares. Incidentally, most of the compliments I receive are from guys. But most of those guys aren't exactly society's standard of macho men - they're more of the artsy types.

I dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable. Somehow I just don't feel comfortable wearing ill-fitting polyester trousers, nor do I feel good while wearing denim underwear. I suppose I fall somewhere in between the two categories, if you will... as if someone can be categorized by what type of pants she wears.

I don't need to be told what "works" and what doesn't, in many regards. People are going to judge me for wearing brown shoes with black socks? Pft. People are going to judge me for speaking up for what I believe in? God forbid I don't attract a suitable mate by the time I'm twenty. It's ridiculous how, to some extent, I'm expected to abide by what other people expect of me as a young lady. I'm not really referring to people I know, but more of what expected of any young woman by anyone.

I digress entirely. I go off on tangents too frequently, no? Anyway, what I originally wanted to say is that I wouldn't mind dressing in a more expressive, possibly artistic, way. The end.

Open Mic Night

An outfit post!... after nearly two weeks. I'm going to a local coffee shop's open mic night - something I used to do every week with my friend Tracey, but haven't recently. The last time I went was during March, if I remember correctly. I'm in the mood for some fresh-made hummus! Yum.

I ended up purchasing the Rachel Comey shoes, $119 (down from $198) from Generra, a New York brick and mortar store with an online shop (currently having a great sale!). They seem comfortable enough for commuting to classes, etc. and I just seem to prefer heels. Poorly made flat shoes are terribly uncomfortable. The end.

Hearing about the London riots over the past week has been crazy, and quite worrisome since I leave in a little over two weeks. I have so much to do before my departure. It's all very overwhelming right now. Just the thought of leaving has my head spinning. I'm more excited than anxious, but imagining saying goodbyes and boarding the plane are... weird.

I suppose to distract myself from the heavier parts - school, financial issues, etc. - I've been daydreaming about exploring the city and as much as Europe as my schedule allows. I'm tempted to purchase a new lens, which in my opinion, would be a worthwhile investment (vs. yet another pair of shoes, perhaps), but I cannot decide. I prefer lenses with large apertures to allow great depth of field, but I think if I do go for it, I'll choose a zoom lens so I won't have to run back and forth trying to get a perfect shot. While my 50mm lens serves me very well for outfit photos, it doesn't autofocus on my camera, which isn't ideal for sightseeing. My 18-55mm lens is a little beaten up. Sigh.

I still want to fit in a day trip to the beach during my quickly-dwindling summer. Sigh.

Thoughts for Tuesday, v. 15: Fashion's Obsession with Thylane Loubry Blondeau

Yes, I've been slacking off - it's summer and my mind is already in London. Instead of waxing poetic about my hopes and expectations, I've temporarily halted my Thoughts for Tuesday column. While I can't guarantee this post marks its official revival, I can't help the urge to write when disturbed.

Thylane Loubry Blondeau is a French model, with long hair, striking eyes... and she's just ten years old. Even so, child models and actors exist, frequently without controversy ('Toddlers and Tiaras' excluded from "the norm"). She graced the cover of Vogue Enfant, shown frolicking as many children do. Now she's made her way into the pages of Vogue Paris, not without dispute, however.

At ten, she's barely younger than the teenage models seen in the same publications and on fashion runways. As much as the industry is criticized for infantilizing women, it's no stranger to middle-school aged girls dressing in a way many people consider "too mature." Daphne Groeneveld, for instance, was only fifteen when featured on the cover of the same magazine containing an infamous Blondeau editorial (Vogue Paris, January 2011, guest-edited by Tom Ford). Alongside Tom Ford, she conveyed youth, beauty, and luxury.

In Groeneveld's case, it was hardly a satirical move - it's arguably normal. Yet defenders of Thylane's oft-provocative editorials cite satire as a driving force and inspiration. Little girls play dress up in the mothers' and sisters' clothes, right? Yet there's a difference placing a young girl in an adult setting, in "adult" clothing, in "adult" make up, in "adult" poses for an adult industry. It's hardly attempting to sell a product other than controversy itself.

Commenters at Fashionista argue it's perfectly fine if her parents allow it and if she simultaneously enjoys it. Yet is a ten year old capable of consenting to implied nude photos (photos taken sans-shirt, in this case, though her torso is covered by beaded necklaces in a style popularized by hippies). Furthermore, if her parents allow this, does it make it acceptable? While her mother does claim to have her best interests in mind, it is important to remember that parents can be guilty of exploiting their own children - their discretion doesn't automatically make it right.

Other commenters claim if one views the photos as sexual, then there's something wrong with the viewer. The nature of these photographs does not justify any harassment. Period. None of her photographs reach the horrendous level of child pornography, but some claim that these actions, by default, objectify the child.

It isn't a matter of whether the viewer herself (or himself) is aroused by images. It's more of acknowledging the sad truth that there are people who do enjoy it, and knowing this can promote a feeling of discomfort in the viewer.

Battle of the Shoes

These shoes have similar features, but there's obvious differences as well. My vote will always go with Rachel Comey whenever a battle of the shoes begins, but the price, the lower heel, and the synthetic leather give the Pixie Market boots a good fight. However, I'm more keen on ankle boots at higher heel heights, but I'm not sure the lower of these two even qualify as "boots." More like "shooties," no?

This is probably as close to manic-pixie-dream-girl as my style ever gets. Not that I'm really any sort of "dream girl," but wearing vintage inspired clothing makes me feel like I should be the (most likely) standoffish love interest of an alternative guy in some indie movie. Not that it's a bad thing. I love this dress!

If you read many style blogs, you probably read Annebeth's, so you might know she has this dress. I'd been stalking this dress on Asos for a while, but seeing her wear it made me take the plunge! So this outfit is partially inspired by Annebeth.

I really wanted a spinning photo, just because I've never worn anything so swingy. Unfortunately, the photos were not appropriate. Note to self: do not try spinning in this dress out of joy or excitement. Embarrassment will ensue.

Regardless, I like most of the photos from this set. I never thought to set up my tripod on a sidewalk, since it's rather public, but it was hot and I figured not many people would be outside. However, that didn't mean I didn't receive some funny glances and a "hey kiddo!" from a neighbor's friend. Oh, the daunting life of being a suburbanite. Kidding.

I really need to get on top of things - prepare for the big trip, leave my house during the day, deep clean my room, fix up the blog layout... but I've sort of become nocturnal. It's bad.

I wore this yesterday, during somewhat of a busy day - going to the mall with my sister, eating dinner with my family for my dad's birthday, catching up with a friend, then going out. The forecast didn't call for rain like the previous day, so I dressed up... first time wearing this shirt/millionth time wearing everything else. Balance.

I'm awaiting the arrival of another eBay score - Madewell sandals. I've determined I have too many sandals and not enough shoes/boots, and proportionately less summer clothing. But it's too late in the season, and in 33 days I leave for England, where I hear it's a tad chillier.

I've not yet started to pack or even think about it, for that matter. I've yet to purchase a suitcase large enough for everything I need to bring. Yeah.

Today will probably be busy too - I have to work on an article for Chictopia and then go to dinner with my aunt!

Kept it simple for a walk to the park with my beloved, (somewhat) patient dog, Sadie. This is probably one of my favorite sets of photos posted on Silhouette Girl. I tend to find broken, rusty things aesthetically pleasing, especially in photographs. I used to spend nearly every evening here as a child... now the graffiti has expanded past the wall and onto the playground. It's not very often I actually see people here, unless it's young teenagers walking to the wall to spray paint. I'm not saying that "graffiti" is all bad, but when it's out of suburban teenage angst it's a little annoying. I tend to prefer the more artistic approach, but then again, I'm a sucker for bright colors.

The location of these photos reminds me of Tumblr tag "back to school vibes," as used by Tavi. And then I remember I won't be in this area for back to school vibes. Bittersweet, bittersweet.

I think it's time for a haircut. It's become slightly unruly, and I'm far too lazy to do anything to my hair, especially during summer. I'm low maintenance, for the most part.

I'll probably switch these shoes when I go out for dinner... whenever that will be! I'm rambling.

Also, I discovered the hilarious website Found Footage Festival, and I suppose all of my friends have too since I've posted it on an obscene amount of Facebook walls. I'd particularly like to recommend "I'm A Spoon" to all you fashion lovers. Seriously, watch it. I'm normally not one to eradicate boredom with funny viral videos, but apparently I have a penchant for cheesy 80's/90's informational videos.

New dress and new shoes. I've become slightly addicted to online shopping, especially when the shop is eBay. It's mostly just browsing, but it's time consuming. I like these sandals, but I can't tell if they're trying to be brown or gray. In real life, they look brown, but in these photos, they seem gray. And this dress... in photos, it looks like a cosmic nebula galaxy sort of print, but it's just tie dye on a material that's normally reserved for athletics. Regardless, I'm quite fond, and it's quite comfy. The elastic waist doesn't seem like it'll cause too much sweating, which can be a problem during hot days.

This outfit is simple. I know simple suits me - effortless at best, boring at worst - but I do wish to break out of my comfort shell a little. I have a few more new garments, including a slightly absurd but seriously cool retro-inspired dress from Asos. I just need to get dressed more, is what it comes down to.

Oh, and it's entirely obligatory to mention the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part II) since I've been a HP nerd since I can remember. Second grade? Third grade? It all blurs together, but Harry Potter is a symbol of my childhood. So many nights spent staying up too late reading... and rereading and rereading. I even read the seventh book twice in the two weeks since its release, mostly because I was in denial that the paper part was over. And now the film portion's here - for some reason I'm getting all emotional about it, even though we all know the books are so much better. This is the end of the saga.

I expect to be hysterically crying by the time I leave the theater.

Thoughts for Tuesday, v.14: Investment Pieces

I've quit Forever 21 for some time now. I don't bother to go in when I'm at any mall, and their website is no longer one of my must-look shops. If I do ever make my way into the store, I usually see a few cute pieces, even classic pieces, but I never bother to try anything on, much less actually buy anything.

Almost nothing at Forever 21 is made to last, and that's a quality that has begun to irk me. Granted, I'm broke, and moving to London in a few months so I really don't have any money to spare on new clothes. However, a few new things have entered my closet recently that possessed price tags higher than I'm accustomed to. True, I've gotten good deals (See by Chloe and Stella McCartney sandals, a beautiful tie-dye dress I have yet to wear...) but the value simply seems better, in the long run.

I've never really been one to buy anything and everything - most of my purchases are well thought out, and impulse buys end up serving me well. I'd just rather a pair of shoes, albeit more expensive, that will last a few seasons opposed to something that falls apart by the end of summer.

I'm not swearing off "cheap" clothing entirely - ASOS and H&M items are still high on a few wishlists. But it seems I'm in a transitioning period, in more than one way. It's occurred to me that I have a month and a half left to do a closet clean-out before I leave the country - including many items I initially anticipated to sell through a blog shop.

My current favorites will remain just that until they've worn out, but my standards for replacements will be higher. My ideal wardrobe will probably take years to build, but I'm in absolutely no hurry.

What I've Been Up To: eBay Shoe Shopping Spree, Summer Cooking, and Nokia N8

Well, as this post title implies, I've been up to everything except blogging. Kidding. I've actually been lounging around way too much, sleeping non-stop, etc. But of course I squeezed in some time for shoe shopping and cooking.

Stella McCartney has been one of my favorite designers for quite some time, and I've been dying to get my hands, er, feet, on a pair of her shoes since then. She doesn't use fur or leather, and I'm uncomfortable buying leather unless it's pre-worn or sustainably made. And shall I mention her stellar designs? My go-to flat sandal are falling apart, so I decided it was time for a new pair. At $50, I'd say I did well!

And then there's the See by Chloe's, which is slightly ironic since McCartney used to design for Chloe. Must say something about my tastes! There's a chip on one of the sandals, and they were going for $100 but I made an offer for $50. And voila. My first pair of wedge sandals, which is weird since I have so many damn shoes, it seems.

And now for... a recent summery food concoction! Yellow squash and zucchini with angel hair pasta - I based this off a recipe from People, of all publications, but it's super easy that it barely needs a recipe. But since it's so delicious, I'll share!

Ingredients:
1 small/medium yellow squash
1 small/medium zucchini
1/5 box of spaghetti, angel hair, or whatever type of pasta
olive oil
1/2 tablespoon fresh chopped mint
2 cloves garlic
salt and pepper, to taste
bread crumbs, optional

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees, and put vegetables on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, and use salt and pepper. Bake for 7 minutes, stir, then another 6 minutes. Remove from oven.

In a saute pan, heat up a tablespoon of olive oil on medium-low heat, then add garlic. Cook until fragrant. Add the vegetables and mint, cook for a few minutes. Set to low heat.

Cook the pasta using directions on box, and when ready, drain and reserve 1/4 cup of the water. Add pasta to the pan, and add water. Cook until it begins to simmer.

Add bread crumbs if desired, and eat!

It's easy and perfect for summer - I used a zucchini from my neighbor, and mint from my parent's garden! Hopefully once our zucchinis come up I can make this more often!

That Suburban Feeling

Everything I've been doing lately feels so suburban. Of course, that makes sense, since I live in a suburban town and do typical suburban things, but it almost feels like a dream. Maybe it's that I'm slowly coming to the realization that I will be moving thousands of miles away this fall, but my life as of late has felt like something out of a coming-of-age-but-not-exclusive-to-teens drama. The kind where they film outside on a summer night and the grass is a shade of nighttime grass green.

I wore this yesterday to a friend's barbecue get-together. Sparklers, food and drink, frolicking in the grass... even though I'm having fun it's almost panic inducing once I drag myself up the stairs into the comfort of my bedroom. It's weird. Not entirely atypical, though.

Tomorrow's the fourth of July, and I have no idea where my summer's going. But compared to last year, this was the point when things just started to become fun and spontaneous and whatever else summer is stereotypically.

Look who's back! I've had this laptop for two weeks, yet this is my first outfit post. Finally.

Yesterday involved an attempt to visit the art museum but discovering a weird amount of traffic, so instead me and my friend met up with another friend to get some pizza at SliCE. They have vegan cheese - a rare occurrence for pizzerias! I ordered a veggie slice topped with vegan mozzarella. If the crust was a titch softer, it would've been awesome.

I'd been stalking this top in H&M for a few weeks, so when I purchased it I was expecting to wear it right away. I guess with life and all I forgot about it. It's comfy. And lightweight and everything I like in summer tops.

I suppose this is also the blog debut of these sunnies. In case you were curious, which I suppose you were.

After coming home from the city, I took a quick power nap then caught up with a family friend I haven't seen since April. We went swimming then headed to the supermarket to buy food. We made fried Oreos! Everything you don't need in a food. And of course, I insisted on making them vegan. Hurrah, greasy vegan food.

What I've Been Up To

So, it may seem that I've been MIA these past few weeks... it's been, what, two weeks since I've posted an outfit? Truth be told, I haven't really been dressed in anything besides a tshirt and cutoffs, if that. Most days I've just been lounging in a tank and pj shorts.

Life has been a little crazy, as usual, and I'm dealing with some personal issues at the moment. Sometimes it's really difficult to detach myself from a situation - I can't be too involved in others' problems too much, or this happens. And that's just not fair to me, regardless of whom I want to help. I need to remind myself to protect myself before trying to assist others.

I just caught up on blog reading, and loaded up my Tumblr queue. I'm contemplating a few purchases (many items from the ASOS summer sale, a suitcase at Ruelala and a skirt at Ideeli...) but I'm experiencing typical indecisiveness. If anything, I should probably go for the suitcase, but I could probably find a normal looking one for cheaper. I've never owned a "regular" suitcase, now that I think of it... it's always been polka dots, animal prints, and bright colors.

Lucky me, I've won giveaways at What I Wore and LIVE GLAM OR DIE.

I hope all is well, and I may go on a city date tomorrow which would mean an outfit post, finally!

Graduation Day

I took these photos prior to heading out for a graduation rehearsal then the actual ceremony. I bought this dress the other day and sort of fell in love. It fits perfectly, and isn't quite like any other dress I own. The material is lightweight and silky, but not actual silk. Score.

This beautiful necklace arrived in my mailbox yesterday morning. I had a similar vintage necklace, but I lost it this past winter. I loved the uniqueness of it, and even though the sentimental value is gone, this cottonwood leaf will replace it quite nicely, I think.

I was expecting a long, drawn out ceremony like last year's, but it didn't drag on nearly as much as I expected it. Also, I was delightfully surprised at winning one of eight awards! Truthfully, I was a little zoned out, but I heard something pertaining to achievement in visual and performing arts. And what do you know, I won. I'm honestly very proud of myself - something that's a little rare since I'm so critical most of the time.

That felt more like an accomplishment than simply graduating. I usually say I don't/didn't put much effort into my work at high school, but that was sort of just an excuse or preventative measure so I wouldn't care when I wouldn't be recognized. I know, I know - that's sort of lame and that recognition can be overrated, but out of all the talented people that could have won it, it was me. And it feels good.

After the ceremony, my family, a few friends and I went to the Wayne location of White Dog Cafe. It was really nice, even with the torrential downpour upon exiting.

Today shall involve cleaning my room, and hopefully purchasing a new computer (Macbook Pro!) with my award.

I'm happy.

Senior Prom, 2011

Prom was nearly a week ago, but I'm just now finding the time to post these photos. It's been a little hectic, with a shore trip, wallowing in self-pity due to some terrible sunburn, graduation rehearsals, and whatever else.

So, I suppose I shall explain my outfit! The dress is vintage, and I've had it for years. It's miraculously fit me all along, and the second I tried it on, I knew I had to wear it to a prom. Or somewhere, but prom was the most likely option.

All of the jewelry is borrowed from my aunt - these awesome firework-esque earrings and the rhinestone bracelets which were formerly my grandma's.

And the shoes... I had spent a day in the city trying to find shoes, and came across these beauties in Buffalo Exchange for a mere $26. Unfortunately, I didn't get any good shots of them, but they're pretty versatile so don't expect this to be my last time wearing them!

Now, for some typical prom photos, since I guess that's the thing to do when you're going to prom. I went with my friend Christian, who I may or may not have mentioned on here before? He's taken a few outfit photos for me and has been one of my really good friends over the past year.

Below, pictured is Tracey and I, along with a random date lurking in the back with whom I'm not familiar.

Above, is Christian, Manny (Tracey's date), Tracey and I, being the usual goofs that we are. This pretty much describes each of us.

I didn't take many photos at prom since I was too busy dancing and mingling. I'm sort of joking about the latter - I'm a chronic non-mingler. My hair and makeup were in tact by the end of the night, thanks to my lovely friend Lauren who will soon be graduating from cosmetology school.

Within the next eight hours, I will officially graduate from high school. It's become less and less of a big deal over the past few months, but it's gaining a bit of significance as I'm going to be studying abroad in London this fall. And you know, it's sort of a big transition. I leave in a little over ten weeks, which is entirely surreal.

Thoughts for Tuesday, v.13: June 14, World Blood Donor Day

Recently, I've been pondering my beliefs relative to my actions. There's so many issues I do care about, but getting involved and actually doing something has proven a bit more difficult. Case in point: today is World Blood Donor Day, and I've never donated blood. By the time I turned sixteen, I had lost too much weight and wasn't eligible. In accordance with the Red Cross guidelines, I'm still technically not able.

However, that doesn't mean I can't do anything. As with many issues such as these, raising awareness can be incredibly important. I've heard people ask why there's so many walks for breast cancer and other diseases and illness, stating that simply walking does nothing. But it's not just taking a walk. Along with fund raising, events such as these raise awareness.

Nexcare has created a line of colorful, fun bandages with the word "give" boldly written across. Along with being arguably more stylish than your typical bandage, the message is there. However, there's more to it - Nexcare is in its third year of a collaboration with the American Red Cross and Niki Taylor, a model who suffered a nearly-fatal car accident and has since become an advocate for this cause.

Truth be told, I have wanted to donate blood for years, as I've mentioned, but I never fully realized how important it is. Blood centers typically face shortages at this time of year, and on average, someone in the country needs a blood donation every two seconds. Yet only 8% of people eligible to give blood do.

I've set a goal for myself to become more involved with charities and causes I consider important, such as environmental issues, animal cruelty, and yes, blood donation. Even if I can't donate, such as in this scenario, I can still raise my voice.

After a whirlwind weekend of prom, lounging in an inflatable boat in the front of a YMCA, going to the beach, going to another beach, falling asleep on the beach with my clothes on beneath an overcast sky and waking up to the bright sun... To-do list for the evening includes: posting on my Tumblr and emptying the tabs I'm browsing, aloe vera, catching up on blogs, more aloe, and editing all of my photos.

Thoughts for Tuesday, v.12: Sincerity in Blogging, and Life

It's not seldom that someone (in real life) calls me rude. I'm a bit introverted, a little awkward, I daydream frequently (thus distracting myself), and my sense of humor heavily relies on sarcasm. I do not believe I am rude - my voice is quiet, often to an inaudible degree, I suppose. Friends, family, and whoever else told me I needed to become more outgoing. Long story short, I accepted that I'm just not a social butterfly and my personality is a little awkward (but endearing). So what?

My real-life demeanor is barely evident on my blog. My writing is indeed personal, but my carefree attitude isn't always displayed to onlookers. I've been told I'm too serious, but once someone gets to know me, he or she would say otherwise. However, amongst people I don't know too well, I'm a different person. Perhaps it's partly due to my natural shyness, but regardless, it can feel a little fake. There's a time and place for certain behavior, and I often feel that my true personality does come off as rude. So I ditch it.

I'll switch the focus to how this relates in blogging, since I've been talking about myself nonstop on here. We can all appreciate niceness, but there's a point at which someone may seem too polite. It doesn't seem sincere. Not always, anyway.

I'm just as guilty. Come on, I think we can all admit to commenting on other blogs just for the sake of commenting and possibly gaining exposure. It's this type, from my observation, that tend to be inauthentic. Granted, one doesn't typically make an effort to comment on something a little lackluster, but telling another her dress is nice and typing all those characters into the word verification box is barely worth it. Unless of course, you're trying to reach out in as few words as possible. Or maybe you're just too tired or lack time. I can't speak for everyone, but it happens.

I suppose I'm one of those people who believes sincerity and being genuine have merit, and that a good personality is truly valuable. Maybe that's bullshit, but why pretend to give a damn when you don't?

Floral Dress Day

I ventured into Philly today in hopes of successfully ending my quest for shoes (and for an appointment). Stopped at Blackbird Pizzeria for a slice of vegan pizza... which was quite good, as I remember it being. I browsed many shops in Olde City - reminder to self: return whenever money is not scarce - to no avail, though I did see many clothing options. I also came across the Google Maps vehicle, but that's irrelevant. I went to my appointment, then went down to the Rittenhouse area. And I found shoes! I would post a photo, but I'll be posting my prom photos sometime this weekend, hopefully, so you'll see them then!

Also picked up the latest issue of Bust, aka my favorite magazine for a plethora of reasons, and met a tiny kitten going home with her owner on the El. All in all, today's been a good day. Hoping tomorrow will go just as well, or at least smoothly.

I just decided I find myself more attractive in the mirror or in mirrored images. Such is life?

I wore this on Wednesday... also an incredibly hot, sticky, humid day. I made a much wiser choice in wearing this simple dress. It's lightweight and doesn't require much adjusting. Perfect for such days! I've found a new love in outlet shopping... last weekend I ventured over to a center with a Last Call store (which had a fabulous 30% off everything sale in honor of Memorial Day) where I found this cool dress in the clearance section for a mere $30 (originally $150+, score!).

Since then, I went to another outlet mall featuring a Last Call store and Saks Off Fifth, the latter at which I encountered a pair of fall 2010 Alexander Wang mules in my size for $120. Seriously. And a pricier pair of lucite spring 2010 Prada heels... sadly not the chandelier version, but wickedly cool nonetheless.

I ended up changing into my swimsuit shortly after I arrived home so I could go swimming with some friends. It's not officially summer yet, say the calendar and my last few high school events, but it already feels like it. And I enjoy that.

The forecast called for rain, and it became a little cloudy and windy, but then sunny again. Hurrah.

On a slightly different note, I'm reconsidering opening a blog shop (skirts, tops, dresses, shoes, and perhaps some jewelry!)... though I'm curious if anyone will actually take interest. I suppose I can photograph a few items and see what happens!

My New-to-me (Reconstructed!) Vintage Skirt

I wore this yesterday... probably a bad choice. It was around ninety degrees outside, as well as incredibly humid. I should have opted for a simple sundress, but I was so excited about this skirt. My aunt had some vintage clothing she offered to alter/reconstruct for me since she's getting back into sewing, and I fell in love with this patterned fabric! I think it was originally a dress, but now it's a mini floral skirt!

These photos were taken at a state park near my house. I've had a few shoots here before... one back in February, and in the other during October, I believe. However, my sister doesn't really understand my camera or how to focus anything, and my lens kept fogging up due to humidity... thus photos not as sharp as they could be. I thank my sister for putting up with me, though!

Also, I've discovered my hair can go into a ponytail. It's been years, really. Granted, my bangs still fall out, but I don't have to use a million bobby pins to keep my little hairs up at the bottom.

And I just realized all of these photos include the slightly-bend-sideways-leg pose. It's my go-to pose, even though I'm not even sure it's the most flattering/it makes me look insecure.

Thoughts for Tuesday, v.11: Free Write

Honestly, I'm really stressed out - no apparent reason either other than getting into the habit of my internship and still not being able to figure out whether I'll be studying abroad during fall or spring, if at all. I can't think of a controversial topic or anything thought provoking. No, here's another personal post.

My room is such a mess and I have my artwork piled up everywhere. Though I definitely feel more motivated with creative endeavors, I'm simply too stressed/busy to attempt to go through it and find a place for it all. Seriously, why did I think I'd ever use nearly a hundred mismatched bowls, cups, and other ceramic items?

I have my prom in a little more than a week, and before I go I plan on dying my hair back to its natural color. I'm not even stressed about that, though. One of my best friends is in beauty school, so she can do it for me whenever and it's pretty much just hanging out rather than feeling obligated to make small talk with the hair stylist.

That's another thing: small talk. I'm an introvert. I keep to myself, by nature. I don't share my every though nor do I strike up conversation all the damn time. It's a hassle for me, honestly. I think I've come out of my shell enough where I can talk to people without being crippled by anxiety - or simply text someone to see what's up without getting incredibly nervous - but I'm not the kind of person that talks all the time. I observe, I soak up my surroundings, etc.

With all of that being said, I'd like to take a moment to reflect upon how far I've come in that aspect. You know, my "social life" aka the most important part of high school. I used to sit in all the time wishing I had something to do, despite my comfort being alone sometimes. I think the difference is that I was lonely, not simply alone, y'know? Over this past year and a half I've made quite a few friends... many of whom are merely acquaintances, but I've also gained some solid friends.

Hurrah. I do prefer this feeling over being insatiably bored, but I suppose I'm just trying to explain my absence. I don't think I'm doing a great job though - or perhaps I am, considering how poorly constructed this entire post is. I'm not trying to be critical, but normally I put more thought into writing. Sometimes it's nice to just let the words come to me instead of desperately trying to find them.

Hopefully by next week I'll be back to blogging more frequently. And then the following week I graduate! This is madness. The good kind, of course.

I bought this asymmetrical black dress at TJ Maxx. I was on the quest for shoes suitable for prom, but I'm terrible at finding good things in discount stores. Naturally, I didn't even find this myself. But that's whatever, right?

I'm done my internship for the weekend, and I'm itching to go to the beach. Literally every Facebook status on my news feed involves driving down/wanting to go/being there. I'd probably settle for a pool with many friends. I definitely would, actually.

It's weird to me that I'm growing my hair out... I still haven't decided if I want to get it cut in June, but I think I might let it get a little longer for a change of pace. It's been nearly two years since my hair has been this long. But either way, I'm going to dye it one color before prom (so I won't have these roots anymore!) and possibly put in more purple after graduation.

It's a long weekend (yay!) so I'll have plenty of time to catch up on blogging and even squeeze in some adventures. I love, love, love this time of year, in case it's not evident.

Last Day

So, I did it. I have to complete my internship, but I'm done classes at high school. Forever. For years I thought this day would never come, but alas, it has, and I even shed many tears. Yeah, me, the girl who tried to remain indifferent to everything, the girl who tried to conceal all emotions while in school. I hugged friends and teachers and went on my merry way.

By now (post-nap and having to lug all of my stuff home) I'm kind of over the whole sentimental part of leaving high school. I mean, for now, anyway. I'll probably have the same song session and cry-fest the night before I graduate. Looking forward to that, of course.

I'm in the market for a new pair of sandals. Actually, two pairs of sandals, if I count shoes I'll need for prom.

So, today (Thursday... I've lost track of the days this week) is my school's annual art show and was the second to last day of high school for seniors. My mind is occupied on the first event, but surely, after the show, and especially when I'm tearing down all of my hard work, I'll feel it. That high school is over. I know it's really not a big deal, at all. I mean, I was barely phased by starting high school. I haven't put much effort into my studies here, even though I was recognized at an awards ceremony for an "outstanding contribution". Whatever that was.

No, I didn't first hear that song through Guitar Hero, though I'll admit it was always my first choice to play. I first heard that songs years after my first exposure to Social D, while in a friend's car on a warm summer night. It was the summer after seventh grade.

I'm just amazed that the time has passed so quickly. But then again, it felt like the end would never come.

Needless to say, I'm feeling a little ambivalent about this whole high-school-ending-and-possibly-not-seeing-many-of-my-classmates-ever-again thing. Despite my apathetic attitude I held most of the time, I'm probably going to cry. Weird.

Anyway, I should be leaving for the show very shortly. I'll be sure to take photos of my wall that I've put together!

Also, I'm thinking of finally telling people I know (besides a select few) about my blog. I mean, what are they going to do, judge me? Maybe I'll gain a few new photographers. Ha. I'm silly

Despite fashion being something frequently associated with a fancy of women, it is arguable that men dominate the field as designers, photographers, and in some cases, even models.

Some say that men (gay men in particular) are simply better for this industry. If one looks at a list of winners of the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards from years past, it is evident that male designers prevail. This year, the Womenswear Designer of the Year award nominees include Alexander Wang, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez (the duo at Proenza Schouler), and Marc Jacobs. The Swarovski Award for Womenswear nominates Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung, but only one female team (Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen at The Row). Similarly, all menswear nominees are indeed men.

All nominees are talented designers, but it is illustrated that the proportion of prominent designers is not equal among both genders, despite that fashion school students are mostly female (usually 85 to 95 percent). Of course, this could be influenced by a variety of things, from the fact that professional women have only climbed to the top relatively recently, Anna Wintour's alleged preference of male designers, or the camaraderie between men as opposed to the perceived rivalry between women.

But what about highly influential female designers - Coco Chanel? Miuccia Prada? Donna Karan? Kate and Laura Mulleavy at Rodarte? And a personal favorite, Stella McCartney? These women are not just female designers, though. They stand alongside their male peers, equally. It's ridiculous to say that only male designers have achieved success.

Compared to other industries, fashion is accepting of and accessible to women, but there's still a handful more men that get ahead. I have no idea if "things are changing," nor does there seem to be any evidence that there is a disparity (thus no suggestion that the gap is lessening).

Apparently, I had a thing for white last week. I guess that's not surprising, judging by my most recent weekly favorites post. White supposedly isn't the most flattering color, but I do think it can be very flattering, actually. However, these jeans? Not so much, considering they're approximately three sizes too large in the leg yet one size too large in the waist. I'm thinking it's time for a new pair, since I really do love white jeans.

Keeping my fingers triple crossed that I'll land one or more of the jobs for which I sent in resumes. I have really terrible luck when it comes to finding a place to work - in the rare event that I even get an interview after following up on my application, they usually end up telling me that they made a mistake and were hiring for a different position/schedule. Whereas some of my friends are hired on the spot, and have employers contacting them initially, and so on.

There's currently a sun shower (at 7pm, I love springtime and consequently, life) and I'm planning on making a strawberry rhubarb pie with the several pounds of strawberries that mysteriously appeared at my house. Oh, and I'll use the humongous food processor I just uncovered... no more hassle of manually mixing pie dough! I'm thrilled.

No white before Memorial Day, you say? Nonsense! Whether you opt for a fresh blazer or white bottoms, it is completely legal and completely encouraged (by me, of course).

On another note, weeks seem to go by so quickly when I think about them in terms of "Weekly Favorites." Seriously, week eleven?! When did that happen?...

Also, I've sent job resumes to three places today! Fingers crossed that I land an interview... or a few!

Necklace - thrifted, tshirt - Wildfox, dress worn as skirt - Target, boots - Doc Martens

I feel strangely clever for this outfit. From a first glance, it's borderline demure though certainly fresh, but upon further inspection my boots are plaid and my hair is purple. What a twist. Not in the black combat boots + pink floral dress way, since the 90's took care of that. I know I'm doing anything novel, but I felt pretty damn fun wearing this.

If it weren't so palely shaded, I'd deem this suitable for frolicking. Alas, it's white and off-white. And I'm terrible at removing stains from clothing.

I guess since I felt so "fun" the jumping photo is obligatory. Clearly, I don't mind making a fool of myself online. Just kidding, kind of - jumping photos aren't foolish. They're cool in my book.

Please excuse any grammatical errors in this post... it's approaching 1am (scheduled post) and I'll probably forget to edit it post-sleep. Who am I kidding, I never edit my posts!
